Texas CNA Certification Overview

To become a Certified Nurse Aide in Texas, you must complete a state-approved CNA training program and pass the Texas Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation administered by Prometric on behalf of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). Texas requires a minimum of 75 hours of CNA training, including at least 16 hours of hands-on clinical practice. Most state-approved programs exceed this minimum. The exam consists of two parts: • A written (or oral) knowledge test: 70 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes • A clinical skills evaluation: demonstration of 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills You must pass both parts to be listed on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry. The passing score for the written test is 70% — at least 49 of 70 questions correct.

Texas CNA Written Exam — What Is Tested

The Texas written exam follows the NNAAP (Nurse Aide Assessment Program) format used across most U.S. states. All 70 questions are drawn from six content areas: • Physical Care Skills (45%) — bathing, grooming, feeding, transfers, positioning, catheter care, elimination • Safety & Emergency Procedures (14%) — fall prevention, RACE protocol, Heimlich maneuver, seizure response • Infection Control (14%) — hand hygiene, PPE donning and doffing order, isolation precautions • Resident Rights (11%) — OBRA regulations, right to refuse care, privacy, abuse reporting • Psychosocial Care Skills (8%) — therapeutic communication, dementia care, end-of-life support • Role of the Nurse Aide (8%) — scope of practice, chain of command, documentation With 45% of questions coming from Physical Care Skills, Texas candidates who master bathing, transfers, and catheter care give themselves a significant advantage on exam day.

Texas Prometric Testing Locations

The Texas CNA written exam is administered at Prometric testing centers throughout the state. Testing is available in all major Texas cities and many smaller communities: • Houston (multiple locations) • Dallas and Fort Worth • San Antonio • Austin • El Paso • Lubbock • Amarillo • Corpus Christi • McAllen • Beaumont To find the Prometric testing center nearest you and view available exam dates, visit prometric.com and search for Texas nurse aide. Your training program will provide your authorization to test once you complete the required coursework. In Houston and Dallas, test slots fill up quickly — register as soon as your authorization is issued.

Texas CNA Skills Test — What to Expect

The clinical skills evaluation is conducted at a separate Prometric skills testing facility. You will be asked to demonstrate 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills. A trained evaluator will observe each skill and check off whether you completed the required steps. Handwashing is evaluated as part of every skill. You must perform proper handwashing at the beginning and end of each demonstration — skipping or rushing handwashing steps is a common reason candidates fail the Texas skills test. Frequently tested skills in Texas include: • Handwashing • Measuring and recording radial pulse and respirations • Providing perineal care for a female resident • Assisting a resident with a transfer from bed to wheelchair • Providing passive range of motion exercises for the shoulder and elbow • Positioning a resident in the lateral (side-lying) position • Making an occupied bed Review the Texas Nurse Aide Candidate Handbook available on the Prometric website for the complete skills list and required steps for each skill.

How to Prepare for the Texas CNA Exam

Texas has a written exam pass rate of approximately 70–75% for first-time candidates. Consistent practice test use is the strongest predictor of first-attempt success. Recommended study plan: 1. Start with a full 70-question diagnostic test before studying anything. Your results by topic will tell you where to focus first. 2. Prioritize Physical Care Skills — it is 45% of the exam. Concentrate on the steps for bed baths, transfers using a gait belt, catheter care, and proper positioning. 3. Study Infection Control and Safety together — together they make up 28% of the exam. Know the PPE donning and doffing order cold, and memorize the RACE protocol for fire response. 4. Practice under timed conditions. Run a 90-minute countdown while taking a full practice test. Pacing is important — you have about 77 seconds per question. 5. Aim for 80% on practice tests before scheduling your real exam date. CertPrepAcademy.com offers a free 70-question NNAAP practice test with 501 questions across all six content areas — no account required.

After You Pass — Texas Nurse Aide Registry

After passing both parts of the Texas exam, your name is added to the Texas Nurse Aide Registry maintained by HHSC. Texas employers are required to verify registry status before hiring any nurse aide. Your Texas CNA certification is valid for 24 months. To maintain active status, you must work as a nurse aide for at least 8 hours for pay during each renewal period. If you work fewer than 8 hours in a 24-month period, your certification will become inactive and you will need to retake the exam to reactivate it. Texas manages CNA licensure through the TULIP system (Texas Unified Licensure Information Portal). You can verify your Texas nurse aide registry status, check renewal deadlines, or look up another nurse aide through the TULIP portal on the HHSC website.
