To become a Certified Nurse Aide in Texas, you must complete a state-approved CNA training program and pass the Texas Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation administered by Prometric on behalf of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC).

Texas CNA Skills Test — What to Expect

The clinical skills evaluation is conducted at a separate Prometric skills testing facility. You will be asked to demonstrate 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills. A trained evaluator will observe each skill and check off whether you completed the required steps.

Handwashing is evaluated as part of every skill. You must perform proper handwashing at the beginning and end of each demonstration — skipping or rushing handwashing steps is a common reason candidates fail the Texas skills test.

How to Prepare for the Texas CNA Exam

Texas has a written exam pass rate of approximately 70–75% for first-time candidates. Consistent practice test use is the strongest predictor of first-attempt success.

After You Pass — Texas Nurse Aide Registry

After passing both parts of the Texas exam, your name is added to the Texas Nurse Aide Registry maintained by HHSC. Texas employers are required to verify registry status before hiring any nurse aide.
