Michigan CNA Certification Overview

To become a Certified Nurse Aide in Michigan, you must complete a state-approved training program and pass the Michigan Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation administered by HDmaster (D&S Diversified Technologies) on behalf of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). Michigan requires a minimum of 75 hours of CNA training, including at least 16 hours of supervised clinical practice in a long-term care setting. The exam has two parts: • A written (or oral) knowledge test: 70 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes • A clinical skills evaluation: demonstration of 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills You must pass both parts to be listed on the Michigan Nurse Aide Registry. The passing score for the written exam is 70%.

Michigan CNA Written Exam — What Is Tested

The Michigan written exam follows the NNAAP format. All 70 questions come from six content areas: • Physical Care Skills (45%) — bathing, grooming, feeding, transfers, positioning, catheter care, elimination • Safety & Emergency Procedures (14%) — fall prevention, RACE fire protocol, Heimlich maneuver, seizure response • Infection Control (14%) — handwashing, PPE donning and doffing order, isolation precautions • Resident Rights (11%) — OBRA regulations, right to refuse care, privacy, dignity, abuse reporting • Psychosocial Care Skills (8%) — therapeutic communication, dementia care, grief and end-of-life support • Role of the Nurse Aide (8%) — scope of practice, documentation, chain of command Michigan has a substantial nursing home sector, particularly in the Detroit metropolitan area and across the Lower Peninsula. Physical Care Skills and Infection Control are the highest-leverage areas to study first.

Michigan HDmaster Testing Locations

The Michigan CNA written exam is administered by HDmaster at testing centers throughout the state: • Detroit and metro area (multiple locations) • Grand Rapids • Lansing • Flint • Ann Arbor • Kalamazoo • Saginaw • Traverse City • Marquette (Upper Peninsula) To find the nearest testing center and available exam dates, visit hdmaster.com and search for Michigan nurse aide. Your training program will provide your authorization to test upon completing the required 75 hours. Detroit-area testing slots fill quickly — register as soon as your authorization is issued.

Michigan CNA Skills Test — What to Expect

The clinical skills evaluation is conducted at an HDmaster skills testing facility. You will demonstrate 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills. A trained evaluator scores each skill against a checklist of required steps. Handwashing is evaluated within every skill — perform proper hand hygiene at the start and end of every skill demonstration. Michigan evaluators pay close attention to handwashing technique, gait belt positioning, and catheter care direction. Commonly tested Michigan skills include: • Handwashing • Measuring and recording radial pulse and respirations • Providing catheter care for a female resident • Assisting with a bed-to-wheelchair transfer using a gait belt • Passive range of motion for the shoulder and elbow • Positioning a resident in Fowler's position • Making an occupied bed The Michigan Nurse Aide Candidate Handbook published by HDmaster contains the complete list of 25 possible skills and required steps.

How to Prepare for the Michigan CNA Exam

Michigan's first-attempt written exam pass rate is approximately 70–75%. Candidates who study with structured practice tests consistently outperform those using classroom notes alone. Recommended study plan: 1. Start with a full 70-question diagnostic practice test. Review your topic scores to identify your weakest areas before spending time on content you already know. 2. Begin studying with Physical Care Skills — 45% of the exam. Master transfer steps (gait belt placement, lock wheelchair wheels, pivot to stronger side), bathing sequence, and catheter care technique. 3. Study Infection Control and Safety next — together 28% of the exam. Know PPE donning and doffing order and have the RACE fire response protocol memorized. 4. Take at least two full timed practice tests before exam day. Aim for 80% on practice exams to build a comfortable buffer above the 70% passing score. 5. For the skills test, practice each skill from start (handwashing) to finish (handwashing) multiple times. Do not skip steps — evaluators check each one. CertPrepAcademy.com offers a free 70-question NNAAP practice test with 501 questions across all six content areas — no account needed.

After You Pass — Michigan Nurse Aide Registry

After passing both parts of the Michigan exam, your name is added to the Michigan Nurse Aide Registry maintained by LARA. Michigan employers are required to verify registry status before hiring any nurse aide. Your Michigan CNA certification is valid for 24 months. To maintain active status, you must work as a nurse aide for at least 8 hours for pay during each renewal period. If your certification lapses, you must retake both the written and skills portions of the exam. You can verify your Michigan nurse aide registry status through the LARA online registry portal.
