Missouri CNA Certification Overview

To become a Certified Nurse Aide in Missouri, you must pass the Missouri Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation — a two-part exam administered by Prometric on behalf of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS). The exam consists of: • A written (or oral) knowledge test: 70 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes • A clinical skills evaluation: you will be asked to demonstrate 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills You must pass both parts to be listed on the Missouri Nurse Aide Registry. The passing score for the written test is 70% (49 out of 70 questions correct).

Missouri CNA Written Exam — What Is Tested

The Missouri written exam follows the NNAAP (Nurse Aide Assessment Program) format. All 70 questions come from six content areas: • Physical Care Skills (45%) — bathing, grooming, feeding, transfers, positioning, catheter care, elimination • Safety & Emergency Procedures (14%) — fall prevention, RACE protocol, Heimlich maneuver, seizure response • Infection Control (14%) — hand hygiene, PPE order, isolation precautions, standard precautions • Resident Rights (11%) — OBRA regulations, right to refuse care, privacy, abuse reporting • Psychosocial Care Skills (8%) — therapeutic communication, dementia care, end of life • Role of the Nurse Aide (8%) — scope of practice, chain of command, documentation Physical Care Skills accounts for nearly half the exam. Missouri candidates who focus their study time here first consistently perform better on the written test.

Missouri Prometric Testing Locations

The Missouri CNA exam is administered at Prometric testing centers across the state. Major testing locations include: • St. Louis area • Kansas City area • Springfield • Columbia • Jefferson City • Joplin To find the exact address and available test dates near you, go to prometric.com and search for Missouri nurse aide testing. You must register with Prometric before scheduling — your training program will provide you with authorization to test once you complete your state-approved CNA course. Test dates fill up quickly in urban areas. Schedule as soon as you receive your authorization to test.

Missouri CNA Skills Test — What to Expect

The clinical skills evaluation is conducted at a separate skills testing facility, not at the Prometric written exam center. You will be evaluated by a trained skills evaluator. The five skills you must demonstrate are randomly selected from the full list of NNAAP skills. Commonly tested skills in Missouri include: • Handwashing • Indirect care (PPE donning and doffing) • Measuring and recording blood pressure • Providing catheter care for a female resident • Positioning a resident in Fowler's position • Assisting a resident to transfer from bed to wheelchair • Providing passive range of motion for the shoulder You do not need to perform the skills perfectly, but you must complete all critical steps. The handwashing skill is always evaluated as part of every other skill — you will wash your hands at the beginning and end of each skill demonstration.

How to Prepare for the Missouri CNA Exam

Missouri has a pass rate that mirrors the national average — around 70–75% of first-time test takers pass the written exam. Students who use practice tests consistently perform significantly better. Recommended study approach: 1. Take a full 70-question diagnostic practice test before you start studying. Identify your weakest topics. 2. Focus on Physical Care Skills first — it is 45% of the exam. Master bathing, transfers, positioning, and catheter care. 3. Study Infection Control and Safety next — together they make up 28% of the exam. 4. Take full practice tests under timed conditions. Aim for 80% or higher before your test date. 5. For the skills test, practice each skill from start to finish including handwashing. Have someone watch you and check off the steps. CertPrepAcademy.com offers a free 70-question NNAAP practice test with 501 questions across all six topics — no signup required. Use it to identify exactly where you need to focus before your Missouri exam.

After You Pass — Missouri Nurse Aide Registry

Once you pass both parts of the Missouri exam, your name is added to the Missouri Nurse Aide Registry maintained by the Missouri DHSS. Employers are required by law to verify that a CNA is listed on the registry before hiring. Your Missouri CNA certification is valid for 24 months. To maintain your listing on the registry, you must work as a nurse aide for pay for at least 8 hours during each 24-month renewal period. If you let your certification lapse, you must retake the full exam. You can verify your registry status or look up another CNA's status at the Missouri DHSS nurse aide registry website.
