Hawaii CNA Certification Overview

To become a Certified Nurse Aide in Hawaii, you must complete a state-approved CNA training program and pass the Hawaii Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation administered by Prometric on behalf of the Hawaii Department of Health. Hawaii requires a minimum of 75 hours of CNA training, including at least 16 hours of supervised clinical practice. Many Hawaii programs exceed this minimum. The exam has two parts: • A written (or oral) knowledge test: 70 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes • A clinical skills evaluation: demonstration of 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills You must pass both parts to be listed on the Hawaii Nurse Aide Registry. The passing score is 70%.

Hawaii CNA Written Exam — What Is Tested

The Hawaii written exam uses the NNAAP format. All 70 questions come from six content areas: • Physical Care Skills (45%) — bathing, grooming, feeding, transfers, positioning, catheter care, elimination • Safety & Emergency Procedures (14%) — fall prevention, RACE fire protocol, Heimlich maneuver, seizure response • Infection Control (14%) — handwashing, PPE donning and doffing order, isolation precautions • Resident Rights (11%) — OBRA regulations, right to refuse care, privacy, abuse reporting • Psychosocial Care Skills (8%) — therapeutic communication, dementia care, end-of-life support • Role of the Nurse Aide (8%) — scope of practice, documentation, chain of command Hawaii's diverse patient population makes Psychosocial Care Skills — including cultural sensitivity and therapeutic communication — especially important to study alongside the larger Physical Care Skills section.

Hawaii Prometric Testing Locations

The Hawaii CNA written exam is administered at Prometric testing centers on the major islands: • Honolulu (Oahu) • Hilo (Hawaii Island) • Kahului (Maui) • Lihue (Kauai) • Pearl City • Waipahu • Kaneohe To find testing locations and available dates, visit prometric.com and search for Hawaii nurse aide. Your training program issues your authorization to test upon completion. Honolulu testing slots are most plentiful — candidates on neighbor islands may need to travel or plan further in advance.

Hawaii CNA Skills Test — What to Expect

The clinical skills evaluation is conducted at a Prometric skills testing site. You will demonstrate 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills before a trained evaluator. Handwashing is evaluated as part of every skill — perform it at the start and end of each demonstration. Hawaii evaluators pay close attention to hand hygiene and infection control throughout the skills test. Commonly tested skills in Hawaii include: • Handwashing • Measuring and recording blood pressure • Providing catheter care for a female resident • Transferring a resident from bed to wheelchair using a gait belt • Positioning a resident in Fowler's position • Providing passive range of motion for the hip and knee • Providing mouth care The Hawaii Nurse Aide Candidate Handbook is available on the Prometric website.

How to Prepare for the Hawaii CNA Exam

Hawaii's written exam first-attempt pass rate is approximately 70–75%. Practice tests are the most effective preparation tool available. Recommended study plan: 1. Take a full 70-question diagnostic practice test before studying. Use your topic scores to prioritize weak areas. 2. Spend the most time on Physical Care Skills — 45% of the exam. Master bathing, transfers, catheter care, and positioning. 3. Study Infection Control and Resident Rights carefully — Hawaii's healthcare regulations emphasize both. 4. Run at least one full timed practice test (90 minutes) before your exam date. 5. Target 80% on practice tests before your real exam. CertPrepAcademy.com offers a free 70-question NNAAP practice test with 501 questions — no signup required.

After You Pass — Hawaii Nurse Aide Registry

After passing both parts of the Hawaii exam, your name is added to the Hawaii Nurse Aide Registry maintained by the Department of Health. Employers in Hawaii are required to verify registry status before hiring nurse aides in licensed facilities. Your Hawaii CNA certification is valid for 24 months. To maintain active status, you must work as a nurse aide for at least 8 hours for pay during each renewal period. Lapsed certifications require retaking the competency exam. Registry status can be verified through the Hawaii Department of Health website.
