Delaware CNA Certification Overview

To become a Certified Nurse Aide in Delaware, you must complete a state-approved CNA training program and pass the Delaware Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation administered by Prometric on behalf of the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS). Delaware requires a minimum of 75 hours of CNA training, including at least 16 hours of hands-on clinical practice. Most approved programs meet or exceed this minimum. The exam has two parts: • A written (or oral) knowledge test: 70 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes • A clinical skills evaluation: demonstration of 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills You must pass both parts to be listed on the Delaware Nurse Aide Registry. The passing score for the written test is 70%.

Delaware CNA Written Exam — What Is Tested

The Delaware written exam uses the NNAAP format. All 70 questions come from six content areas: • Physical Care Skills (45%) — bathing, grooming, feeding, transfers, positioning, catheter care, elimination • Safety & Emergency Procedures (14%) — fall prevention, RACE fire protocol, Heimlich maneuver, seizure response • Infection Control (14%) — handwashing, PPE donning and doffing order, isolation precautions • Resident Rights (11%) — OBRA regulations, right to refuse care, privacy, abuse reporting • Psychosocial Care Skills (8%) — therapeutic communication, dementia care, end-of-life support • Role of the Nurse Aide (8%) — scope of practice, documentation, chain of command Delaware is a small state with a concentrated healthcare workforce. Candidates who study consistently across all six NNAAP areas are well-positioned to pass on the first attempt.

Delaware Prometric Testing Locations

The Delaware CNA written exam is administered at Prometric testing centers in the state. Testing locations include: • Wilmington • Dover • Newark • Middletown • Milford • Seaford • Georgetown To find the nearest Prometric center and available exam dates, visit prometric.com and search for Delaware nurse aide. Delaware is a small state with limited testing sites — register as soon as you receive your authorization to test from your training program.

Delaware CNA Skills Test — What to Expect

The clinical skills evaluation is conducted at a Prometric skills testing site. You will demonstrate 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills before a trained evaluator. Handwashing is evaluated with every skill — perform it correctly at the start and end of each demonstration. Skipping or rushing hand hygiene steps is the most common reason candidates fail the Delaware skills test. Commonly tested skills include: • Handwashing • Measuring and recording blood pressure • Providing perineal care for a female resident • Transferring a resident from bed to wheelchair using a gait belt • Positioning a resident in Fowler's position • Providing passive range of motion for the shoulder and elbow • Making an occupied bed The Delaware Nurse Aide Candidate Handbook is available on the Prometric website.

How to Prepare for the Delaware CNA Exam

Delaware's written exam first-attempt pass rate is consistent with national averages of 70–75%. Structured practice testing is the most reliable preparation approach. Recommended study plan: 1. Take a full 70-question diagnostic practice test before studying. Identify your weakest NNAAP topics first. 2. Prioritize Physical Care Skills — 45% of the exam. Master bathing technique, gait belt use, catheter care, and positioning. 3. Study Infection Control and Safety together — PPE donning/doffing order and RACE protocol are frequently tested. 4. Run at least one full timed practice test (90 minutes) before exam day. 5. Target 80% on practice tests before scheduling your real exam. CertPrepAcademy.com offers a free 70-question NNAAP practice test with 501 questions — no account required.

After You Pass — Delaware Nurse Aide Registry

After passing both parts of the Delaware exam, your name is added to the Delaware Nurse Aide Registry maintained by DHSS. Delaware employers are required to verify registry status before hiring nurse aides in licensed facilities. Your Delaware CNA certification is valid for 24 months. To maintain active status, you must work as a nurse aide for at least 8 hours for pay during each renewal period. Lapsed certifications require retaking the full competency exam. Registry status can be verified through the Delaware DHSS website.
