Connecticut CNA Certification Overview

To become a Certified Nurse Aide in Connecticut, you must complete a state-approved CNA training program and pass the Connecticut Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation administered by Prometric on behalf of the Connecticut Department of Public Health (CT DPH). Connecticut requires a minimum of 100 hours of CNA training — more than the federal minimum of 75 hours — including at least 16 hours of supervised clinical practice. This additional training prepares Connecticut candidates well for both the exam and the workplace. The exam has two parts: • A written (or oral) knowledge test: 70 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes • A clinical skills evaluation: demonstration of 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills You must pass both parts to be listed on the Connecticut Nurse Aide Registry. The passing score is 70%.

Connecticut CNA Written Exam — What Is Tested

The Connecticut written exam uses the NNAAP format. All 70 questions come from six content areas: • Physical Care Skills (45%) — bathing, grooming, feeding, transfers, positioning, catheter care, elimination • Safety & Emergency Procedures (14%) — fall prevention, RACE fire protocol, Heimlich maneuver, seizure response • Infection Control (14%) — handwashing, PPE donning and doffing order, isolation precautions • Resident Rights (11%) — OBRA regulations, right to refuse care, privacy, abuse reporting • Psychosocial Care Skills (8%) — therapeutic communication, dementia care, end-of-life support • Role of the Nurse Aide (8%) — scope of practice, documentation, chain of command Connecticut's nursing home industry is well-regulated and competitive. Resident Rights and documentation questions tend to be particularly rigorous — study these carefully alongside Physical Care Skills.

Connecticut CNA Skills Test — What to Expect

The clinical skills evaluation is conducted at a Prometric skills testing site. You will demonstrate 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills before a trained evaluator. Handwashing is evaluated as part of every skill — you must perform it correctly at the start and end of each demonstration. Connecticut evaluators pay close attention to hand hygiene and infection control steps throughout the skills evaluation. Commonly tested skills in Connecticut include: • Handwashing • Measuring and recording blood pressure • Providing catheter care for a female resident • Transferring a resident from bed to wheelchair using a gait belt • Positioning a resident in Fowler's position • Providing mouth care • Providing passive range of motion for the hip and knee The Connecticut Nurse Aide Candidate Handbook is available on the Prometric website.

How to Prepare for the Connecticut CNA Exam

Connecticut's 100-hour training requirement means candidates are generally well-prepared — but the exam still requires focused study. First-attempt pass rates are approximately 70–75%. Recommended study plan: 1. Take a full 70-question diagnostic practice test before studying anything. Your topic scores tell you where to spend your time. 2. Focus on Physical Care Skills — 45% of the exam. Master bathing steps, gait belt transfers, catheter care technique, and positioning. 3. Study Resident Rights carefully — Connecticut's regulatory environment places high emphasis on OBRA protections and documentation accuracy. 4. Take at least one full timed practice test (90 minutes) before exam day. 5. Aim for 80% on practice tests before scheduling your real exam. CertPrepAcademy.com offers a free 70-question NNAAP practice test with 501 questions — no signup required.

After You Pass — Connecticut Nurse Aide Registry

After passing both parts of the Connecticut exam, your name is added to the Connecticut Nurse Aide Registry maintained by CT DPH. Connecticut employers must verify registry status before hiring nurse aides in licensed facilities. Your Connecticut CNA certification is valid for 24 months. To maintain active status, you must work as a nurse aide for at least 8 hours for pay during each renewal period. Lapsed certifications require retaking the full competency exam. Registry status can be verified through the CT DPH website.
