Arkansas CNA Certification Overview

To become a Certified Nurse Aide in Arkansas, you must complete a state-approved training program and pass the Arkansas Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation administered by Prometric on behalf of the Arkansas Department of Human Services (DHS). Arkansas requires a minimum of 75 hours of CNA training, including at least 16 hours of supervised clinical practice. Most approved programs meet or exceed this minimum. The exam has two parts: • A written (or oral) knowledge test: 70 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes • A clinical skills evaluation: demonstration of 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills You must pass both parts to be listed on the Arkansas Nurse Aide Registry. The passing score for the written test is 70%.

Arkansas CNA Written Exam — What Is Tested

The Arkansas written exam uses the NNAAP format. All 70 questions are drawn from six content areas: • Physical Care Skills (45%) — bathing, grooming, feeding, transfers, positioning, catheter care, elimination • Safety & Emergency Procedures (14%) — fall prevention, RACE fire protocol, Heimlich maneuver, seizure response • Infection Control (14%) — handwashing, PPE donning and doffing order, isolation precautions • Resident Rights (11%) — OBRA regulations, right to refuse care, privacy, abuse reporting • Psychosocial Care Skills (8%) — therapeutic communication, dementia care, end-of-life support • Role of the Nurse Aide (8%) — scope of practice, documentation, chain of command With Physical Care Skills making up 45% of the exam, Arkansas candidates who master bathing, transfers, and catheter care are well-positioned to pass on the first attempt.

Arkansas Prometric Testing Locations

The Arkansas CNA written exam is administered at Prometric testing centers statewide: • Little Rock • Fort Smith • Fayetteville • Springdale • Jonesboro • Conway • Rogers • Pine Bluff • Bentonville • Hot Springs To find available test dates and the nearest center, visit prometric.com and search for Arkansas nurse aide. Your training program issues your authorization to test upon completion. Little Rock and Fayetteville slots can fill — register promptly after receiving authorization.

Arkansas CNA Skills Test — What to Expect

The clinical skills evaluation is held at a Prometric skills testing site. You will demonstrate 5 randomly selected skills before a trained evaluator who scores each skill using a standardized checklist. Handwashing is evaluated as part of every skill — you must complete all handwashing steps at the start and end of each demonstration. Incomplete hand hygiene is among the most common causes of skills test failure in Arkansas. Commonly tested skills include: • Handwashing • Measuring and recording radial pulse and respirations • Providing perineal care for a female resident • Transferring a resident from bed to wheelchair using a gait belt • Providing passive range of motion for the hip and knee • Positioning a resident in the lateral (side-lying) position • Making an occupied bed Review the Arkansas Nurse Aide Candidate Handbook on the Prometric website for the full list of skills and required steps.

How to Prepare for the Arkansas CNA Exam

Arkansas's written exam first-attempt pass rate is approximately 70–75%. Candidates who complete multiple practice tests before exam day consistently outperform those who rely only on class notes. Recommended study plan: 1. Take a full 70-question diagnostic practice test before studying. Use your topic breakdown to prioritize weak areas. 2. Focus on Physical Care Skills first — nearly half the exam. Master bathing, gait belt technique, catheter care, and positioning. 3. Study Infection Control and Safety together — 28% of the exam. Know PPE order and the RACE protocol cold. 4. Run at least one full timed practice test (90 minutes) before your exam date. 5. Aim for 80% on practice tests to give yourself a buffer above the 70% passing score. CertPrepAcademy.com offers a free 70-question NNAAP practice test with 501 questions — no signup required.

After You Pass — Arkansas Nurse Aide Registry

After passing both parts of the Arkansas exam, your name is added to the Arkansas Nurse Aide Registry maintained by DHS. Employers in Arkansas are required to verify registry status before hiring nurse aides in licensed facilities. Your Arkansas CNA certification is valid for 24 months. To maintain active status, you must work as a nurse aide for at least 8 hours for pay within each renewal period. Lapsed certifications require retaking the full competency evaluation. Registry status can be verified through the Arkansas DHS website.
