Arizona CNA Certification Overview

To become a Certified Nurse Aide in Arizona, you must complete a state-approved CNA training program and pass the Arizona Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation administered by Prometric on behalf of the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS). Arizona requires a minimum of 75 hours of CNA training, including at least 16 hours of hands-on clinical practice in a long-term care setting. Most state-approved programs meet or exceed this requirement. The exam has two parts: • A written (or oral) knowledge test: 70 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes • A clinical skills evaluation: demonstration of 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills You must pass both parts to be listed on the Arizona Nurse Aide Registry. The passing score for the written exam is 70%.

Arizona CNA Written Exam — What Is Tested

The Arizona written exam follows the NNAAP format used across most U.S. states. All 70 questions come from six content areas: • Physical Care Skills (45%) — bathing, grooming, feeding, transfers, positioning, catheter care, elimination • Safety & Emergency Procedures (14%) — fall prevention, RACE fire protocol, Heimlich maneuver, seizure response • Infection Control (14%) — handwashing, PPE order, standard and transmission-based precautions • Resident Rights (11%) — OBRA regulations, right to refuse care, privacy, abuse reporting • Psychosocial Care Skills (8%) — therapeutic communication, dementia care, end-of-life support • Role of the Nurse Aide (8%) — scope of practice, documentation, chain of command Arizona has a large and growing senior population. Physical Care Skills and Resident Rights are the highest-priority areas for Arizona CNA candidates.

Arizona CNA Skills Test — What to Expect

The clinical skills evaluation is held at a Prometric skills testing site. You will demonstrate 5 randomly selected skills in front of a trained evaluator who uses a standardized checklist. Handwashing is evaluated with every skill — perform it correctly at the start and end of each demonstration. In Arizona, evaluators pay close attention to hand hygiene and perineal care technique, as these are the most common failure points. Commonly tested skills in Arizona include: • Handwashing • Measuring and recording blood pressure • Providing perineal care for a female resident • Transferring a resident from bed to wheelchair with a gait belt • Positioning a resident in Fowler's position • Providing passive range of motion for the shoulder and elbow • Providing mouth care The Arizona Nurse Aide Candidate Handbook on the Prometric website lists all skills and required steps.

How to Prepare for the Arizona CNA Exam

Arizona's first-attempt written exam pass rate is approximately 70–75%. Structured practice testing is the most reliable preparation strategy. Recommended study plan: 1. Take a diagnostic 70-question practice test before opening any study materials. Your topic scores will tell you exactly where to start. 2. Prioritize Physical Care Skills first — 45% of the exam. Focus on bathing sequence, gait belt use during transfers, and catheter care direction. 3. Study Infection Control next — PPE donning/doffing order and isolation precaution types are heavily tested with specific right answers. 4. Practice under timed conditions — 90 minutes for 70 questions. Pacing matters. 5. Aim for 80% on practice tests before your real exam date. After You Pass — Arizona Nurse Aide Registry

After passing both exam parts, your name is added to the Arizona Nurse Aide Registry maintained by ADHS. Arizona employers must verify registry status before hiring nurse aides in licensed facilities. Your Arizona CNA certification is valid for 24 months. To maintain active status, you must work as a nurse aide for at least 8 hours for pay during each renewal period. Inactive certifications require retaking the full competency exam. You can verify your Arizona nurse aide registry status through the ADHS website.
