Alaska CNA Certification Overview

To become a Certified Nurse Aide in Alaska, you must complete a state-approved CNA training program and pass the Alaska Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation administered by Prometric on behalf of the Alaska Department of Health. Alaska requires a minimum of 75 hours of CNA training, including at least 16 hours of supervised clinical practice. Many programs in Alaska exceed this minimum given the rural and remote healthcare environment. The exam consists of two parts: • A written (or oral) knowledge test: 70 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes • A clinical skills evaluation: demonstration of 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills You must pass both parts to be listed on the Alaska Nurse Aide Registry. The passing score for the written test is 70%.

Alaska CNA Written Exam — What Is Tested

The Alaska written exam follows the NNAAP (Nurse Aide Assessment Program) format. All 70 questions are drawn from six content areas: • Physical Care Skills (45%) — bathing, grooming, feeding, transfers, positioning, catheter care, elimination • Safety & Emergency Procedures (14%) — fall prevention, RACE fire protocol, Heimlich maneuver, seizure response • Infection Control (14%) — handwashing, PPE donning and doffing order, isolation precautions • Resident Rights (11%) — OBRA regulations, right to refuse care, privacy, abuse reporting • Psychosocial Care Skills (8%) — therapeutic communication, dementia care, end-of-life support • Role of the Nurse Aide (8%) — scope of practice, chain of command, documentation Given Alaska's significant Alaska Native and rural elderly population, Psychosocial Care and Resident Rights questions — including cultural sensitivity — are especially worth reviewing.

Alaska Prometric Testing Locations

The Alaska CNA written exam is administered at Prometric testing centers. Due to Alaska's geography, testing is primarily available in the major population centers: • Anchorage • Fairbanks • Juneau • Sitka • Ketchikan • Wasilla • Kenai • Bethel To find available testing dates and locations, visit prometric.com and search for Alaska nurse aide. Candidates in rural areas may need to travel to Anchorage or Fairbanks for testing. Schedule as early as possible after receiving your authorization to test — slots in smaller communities can be limited.

Alaska CNA Skills Test — What to Expect

The clinical skills evaluation is conducted at a designated Prometric skills testing site. You will demonstrate 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills in front of a trained evaluator. Handwashing is evaluated as part of every skill — you must perform it correctly at the start and end of each demonstration. Failing to complete handwashing steps properly is one of the most common reasons candidates do not pass the skills evaluation. Commonly tested skills include: • Handwashing • Measuring and recording radial pulse and respirations • Providing catheter care for a female resident • Transferring a resident from bed to wheelchair with a gait belt • Positioning a resident in Fowler's position • Providing passive range of motion for the hip and knee • Making an occupied bed Review the Alaska Nurse Aide Candidate Handbook on the Prometric website for the full skills checklist.

How to Prepare for the Alaska CNA Exam

Alaska's written exam first-attempt pass rate is consistent with national averages of 70–75%. Candidates who use structured practice tests consistently outperform those who rely solely on training notes. Recommended study approach: 1. Take a full diagnostic practice test before studying. Identify your weakest NNAAP topic areas first. 2. Focus on Physical Care Skills — nearly half the exam. Master bathing, transfers, catheter care direction, and positioning. 3. Review Infection Control thoroughly — PPE donning/doffing order and isolation precaution types are frequently tested and very specific. 4. Take at least one full timed practice test (90 minutes) before your exam date. 5. Target 80% on practice tests to build a buffer above the 70% passing threshold. CertPrepAcademy.com offers a free 70-question NNAAP practice test with 501 questions — no signup required.

After You Pass — Alaska Nurse Aide Registry

After passing both parts of the Alaska exam, your name is added to the Alaska Nurse Aide Registry maintained by the Alaska Department of Health. Employers in Alaska are required to verify registry status before hiring nurse aides in licensed facilities. Your Alaska CNA certification is valid for 24 months. To maintain active status, you must work as a nurse aide for pay for at least 8 hours during each renewal period. If your certification becomes inactive, you must retake the competency exam to be reinstated. Registry status can be verified through the Alaska Department of Health website.
