Alabama CNA Certification Overview

To become a Certified Nurse Aide in Alabama, you must complete a state-approved CNA training program and pass the Alabama Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation administered by Prometric on behalf of the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH). Alabama requires a minimum of 75 hours of CNA training, including at least 16 hours of hands-on clinical practice. Most state-approved programs meet or exceed this minimum. The exam consists of two parts: • A written (or oral) knowledge test: 70 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes • A clinical skills evaluation: demonstration of 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills You must pass both parts to be listed on the Alabama Nurse Aide Registry (ANAR). The passing score for the written test is 70% — at least 49 of 70 questions correct.

Alabama CNA Written Exam — What Is Tested

The Alabama written exam follows the NNAAP (Nurse Aide Assessment Program) format used across most U.S. states. All 70 questions are drawn from six content areas: • Physical Care Skills (45%) — bathing, grooming, feeding, transfers, positioning, catheter care, elimination • Safety & Emergency Procedures (14%) — fall prevention, RACE fire protocol, Heimlich maneuver, seizure response • Infection Control (14%) — handwashing, PPE donning and doffing order, isolation precautions • Resident Rights (11%) — OBRA regulations, right to refuse care, privacy, abuse reporting • Psychosocial Care Skills (8%) — therapeutic communication, dementia care, end-of-life support • Role of the Nurse Aide (8%) — scope of practice, chain of command, documentation Physical Care Skills accounts for nearly half the exam. Alabama candidates who focus on bathing technique, gait belt transfers, and catheter care give themselves a significant advantage.

Alabama Prometric Testing Locations

The Alabama CNA written exam is administered at Prometric testing centers throughout the state. Testing is available in all major Alabama cities and many smaller communities: • Birmingham • Montgomery • Huntsville • Mobile • Tuscaloosa • Dothan • Auburn • Gadsden • Decatur • Florence To find the Prometric testing center nearest you and view available exam dates, visit prometric.com and search for Alabama nurse aide. Your training program will provide your authorization to test once you complete the required coursework. In Birmingham and Huntsville, test slots can fill up — register as soon as your authorization is issued.

Alabama CNA Skills Test — What to Expect

The clinical skills evaluation is conducted at a Prometric skills testing facility. You will demonstrate 5 randomly selected nurse aide skills in front of a trained evaluator who scores each skill against a checklist of required steps. Handwashing is evaluated as part of every skill. You must perform proper handwashing at the beginning and end of each skill demonstration — skipping or rushing handwashing steps is one of the most common reasons candidates fail the Alabama skills test. Frequently tested skills include: • Handwashing • Measuring and recording blood pressure • Providing perineal care for a female resident • Transferring a resident from bed to wheelchair using a gait belt • Positioning a resident in the lateral (side-lying) position • Providing passive range of motion for the shoulder and elbow • Making an occupied bed Review the Alabama Nurse Aide Candidate Handbook available on the Prometric website for the complete skills list and required steps.

How to Prepare for the Alabama CNA Exam

Alabama's written exam pass rate for first-time candidates is approximately 70–75%. Consistent practice test use is the strongest predictor of first-attempt success. Recommended study plan: 1. Start with a full 70-question diagnostic test before studying anything. Your results by topic will show you where to focus first. 2. Prioritize Physical Care Skills — it is 45% of the exam. Focus on bed bath steps, gait belt transfers, catheter care, and proper positioning techniques. 3. Study Infection Control and Safety together — they make up 28% of the exam. Know the PPE donning and doffing order, and memorize the RACE protocol. 4. Practice under timed conditions. Run a 90-minute countdown on a full practice test before exam day. 5. Aim for 80% on practice tests before scheduling your real exam date. CertPrepAcademy.com offers a free 70-question NNAAP practice test with 501 questions across all six content areas — no account required.

After You Pass — Alabama Nurse Aide Registry

After passing both parts of the Alabama exam, your name is added to the Alabama Nurse Aide Registry (ANAR) maintained by the ADPH. Alabama employers are required to verify registry status before hiring any nurse aide. Your Alabama CNA certification is valid for 24 months. To maintain active status, you must work as a nurse aide for at least 8 hours for pay during each renewal period. If your certification lapses due to non-employment, you will need to retake the competency exam to be reinstated. You can verify Alabama nurse aide registry status through the ADPH website or by contacting the ADPH Nurse Aide Registry directly.
