A resident using a bedpan should be in semi-Fowler's position (head of bed elevated 30-45 degrees) or sitting upright if able, as this is the most comfortable and natural position for elimination. Lying completely flat is uncomfortable and may cause spillage. Side-lying is not appropriate for bedpan use. The upright position promotes dignity and proper elimination.
