From the genitalia toward the anus. Washing from the genitalia toward the anus prevents contamination of the urethra and genital area with bacteria from the anal region. Washing in the opposite direction (anus to genitalia) introduces bacteria into the urinary tract. Circular motions can also cause contamination. Direction is critical for infection prevention.
