To the side and slightly behind the resident. Positioning to the side and slightly behind allows you to provide support and catch the resident if they begin to fall. Being in front blocks their view and path. Being on the opposite side of the walker is awkward and ineffective. Being several feet ahead prevents you from providing immediate assistance if needed.
