On the unaffected (stronger) side to balance the body. A cane should be held on the unaffected (stronger) side. This distributes weight-bearing away from the weaker side and provides proper balance and support mechanics. Holding it on the affected side (A) does not provide proper biomechanical support. Alternating sides (C) defeats the purpose of the assistive device. Preference (D) is not appropriate if it compromises safety.
